Rugby ball buying guide: sizes, training and match balls

Choosing a rugby ball? Compare the size and intended use first, then check the exact model and selected option before ordering. This guide helps you build a shortlist for home practice, club training or match day.

Start with the size your team uses

Sizes 3, 4 and 5 are different options, not colour codes. Size 3 is smaller than size 4, while size 5 is the full-size option. Mini, midi, size 4.5 and specialist balls also exist. Ask your coach or club which size your group needs; an age guide is a starting point, not confirmation of your team’s requirements.

On a product page, select both the size and colour where offered. Read the resulting availability and quantity limit for that combination. A photograph showing several colours does not mean all those balls are included.

Training ball or match ball?

Rhino distinguishes training balls for repeated sessions from match balls for competitive play. Its guide explains that match balls use more natural rubber for grip and feel, while training balls use more synthetic rubber for durability. Construction varies by model, so compare the description rather than choosing from the price alone.

These links show existing models, not a promise that every size or quantity is available. Use the current product options and basket total when deciding.

Check specialist and replica labels

A specialist skills ball has a different purpose from an ordinary match or training ball. Gilbert’s guide includes rebounder half-balls for solo practice. Do not assume that a replica, mini, beach, touch or skills ball is the replacement your team needs: check the product’s stated use and selected size.

Check the complete order

  • Confirm the model, size, colour and number of individual balls or packs.
  • Check what is included. If you need a pump or adaptor, do not assume it comes with the ball.
  • Review current availability and the delivered total in your basket and checkout.
  • For a club quantity or a required date, send your shortlist and postcode through our club enquiry checklist before committing.

For inflation and care, follow the instructions supplied for the exact model and the pressure marked on the ball. Read our delivery and returns information before paying.
